Maria received a bachelor’s degree in both Behavioral Science and Sociology from San Jose State University. Upon graduation, she enrolled in City Year, a national AmeriCorps program that works towards increasing graduation rates in high-poverty communities, and served for two years as a tutor, mentor, and team leader at a middle school in East San Jose.
Currently she serves as Middle School Director for Building Futures Now, which works to develop the academic and interpersonal potential of underserved students. Maria believes every child should have access to a quality education and the social emotional support to thrive. She strives to provide her students with the academic skills and support to make this a reality.
Maria recently completed the Latino Board Leadership Academy with the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley, and in fall 2016, she will be starting her Masters degree at Santa Clara University in Counseling Psychology.
